Designers offer tips for holiday home decor

Even though designers promote new color schemes for Christmas decorating each year, William J. “Buzzy” Heroman says people in Baton Rouge generally prefer the traditional.

“Most of the people we see go for red and gold or red, green and gold,” says Heroman, owner of Billy Heroman’s and the fourth generation of his family in the florist business.

That’s not to say there aren’t those who want a tree decorated in apple green and white or even one with an LSU theme.

Every family has its own tradition when it comes to decorating the Christmas tree. Some prefer the monochromatic look with ornaments all in the same color or theme.

“Some people have trees with every homemade ornament their children ever made,” says Heroman.

The first choice people have to make is whether to get an artificial tree.

“So many men want an artificial tree, but the wife wants the live tree,” says Heroman, who has the perfect solution.

Get the artificial tree and a Fraser fir-scented candle that smells exactly like a fresh tree.

“Everybody is happy,” he says.

Buying an artificial tree or any artificial greenery is an important purchase that requires some study, Heroman says.

He recommends items made of a combination of silk and polyvinyl.

“The harder plastic doesn’t look as nice as you want,” he says. “The better stuff is a blend — a blend of five or six different textures. With proper care and storage, these trees can last for many years.”

Sometimes, when the children are grown and families downsize or move to smaller homes, they no longer want to decorate as elaborately as they did in the past.

“Put a small tree on a box or crate and skirt it down,” recommends Heroman. “Or take a lamp off a table and put up a three- or four-foot tree. You don’t have to have a seven-foot tree.”

One of the biggest trends in Christmas decorating over the past decades has been the rise of Christmas collectibles.

Santas, elves, religious figures and angels are among the most popular items. This year, Heroman’s has a new collection of porcelain carolers.

“People still love the Annalee Christmas dolls that have been hand-painted in New Jersey for 75 years,” he says.

His advice when considering collectibles is to go for the best quality.

“Buy one nice item a year,” he said. “That way you will acquire a really fine collection.”

If you have only one piece, put it on the mantel or on a small table.

Over the years, as you acquire more pieces, you can create the display on a larger surface.

Heroman traces his family’s business to his great-grandfather, Fred Heroman, who had a shop across from St. Joseph Catholic Church, now St. Joseph Cathedral.

“He started selling religious articles,” Heroman recalls. “The story is that he knew a man who knew a man who sold mums (chrysanthemums). They asked him to decorate the altar at the church for All Saint’s.”

That led to other holidays and what is now “the oldest business as a family in Baton Rouge,” he says.

Heroman and his wife, Susie, are already planning for Christmas 2014.

In January, they will go with at least seven family members and employees to market to purchase items that will be delivered in early summer.

“We walk a million different miles,” he said. “We don’t miss a showroom. We don’t want to miss a thing.

An apartment that is an ever-changing design lab

If you study the residential work of Allan Greenberg – all those colonnaded front porches, Palladian windows and formally landscaped lots with stables and grand driveways – a theme emerges. You would expect to find the architect himself living in equally classical surroundings, perhaps in Virginia horse country or among the hedge-fund set in Connecticut.

And yet, the man whom The New York Times once called a “master of literal classicism” lives in the kind of newly built, generic apartment tower that unimaginative developers have been filling Manhattan’s skyline with in recent years. He shares a one-bedroom, 1 1/2-bath, 1,000-square-foot space with his wife, Judith Seligson, an abstract painter.

“Frank Lloyd Wright was always living in environments he designed himself because it was a sales tool,” Greenberg, 75, said. “I don’t feel the need to do that. I like to have city streets and dirty air around me.”

While his job as an architect is to fulfill his clients’ dreams, he said, his own domestic dreams do not involve the baronial country life that so many of his houses suggest.

“I like to live in a very toned-down milieu,” he said. “I don’t want to collect 18th-century furniture or whatever. My idea of paradise is a house or an apartment in which you live with art around you.”

To that end, the couple bought the nondescript apartment eight years ago, for $1.6-million (U.S.), drawn to its windows on three sides, its head-on view of the mouth of the Queensboro Bridge and the opportunity, as the first occupants, to customize the standard builder’s unit. They have treated the space as an art gallery and a design laboratory.

“When we moved in, it was Allan’s playpen,” Seligson, 63, said. “It has evolved in different ways.”

Greenberg cited as an example a pantry closet in the open kitchen-living area.

“These were four really bland steel doors,” he said. They have since been painted in a vibrant pattern that Seligson designed in collaboration with her husband.

A voracious reader, Greenberg also built bookshelves into the breakfast bar and added a small table to orient his breakfast view away from the appliances.

Where there are no windows, the walls and other surfaces are covered with Seligson’s paintings. A load-bearing concrete column in a corner of the living area has been dressed up with one of her text artworks. A custom curved bookcase in the bedroom is filled with smaller works.

Some of the changes they have made are almost imperceptible, like the wooden hardware on a closet door or the recessed lighting above the bed, while others are dramatic.

Greenberg’s daughter, Ruth Frances Greenberg, a ceramist, created a tile mosaic of roses, birds and trellises that covers the walls and ceiling of the half-bathroom; the floor is made of glass tiles imprinted with a photograph of grass.

“You feel like you’re in an English garden,” Allan Greenberg said.

Occasionally, an experiment goes awry, as when he had the bedroom walls and closet painted in a green checkerboard. He was inspired, he said, by a French designer who used marble squares to decorate a wall. “I wondered what that design would look like with paint,” he said. “But it’s too much.”

But even when an experiment fails, the couple agreed, it is part of the joy of living in a home that serves as an ever-changing design lab.

“I want a space which is going to allow me to do the things I love the most,” Greenberg said.

“Which is being an architect, reading and writing about architecture and looking at art.”

In fact, in the half-bath, Greenberg said, he is thinking about getting rid of the tile and “putting down AstroTurf.”

Seligson laughed, and said, “Please tie his hands behind his back.”

Home: no place like it

I was on the road a lot, for a few years, selling books like a salesman sells brushes (except these, of course, are magic brushes), and one of the great pleasures of being a writer on the move is that you can talk to anyone. People tell you things.

Sometimes, at a foreign book festival, it would be my job to talk to the money, which is how I found myself, in the years after the crash, sitting beside one or other jet-lagged Master of the Financial Universe and keeping the conversation going, which is to say talking about him.

These men have their problems too. One guy is living in Hong Kong, the tax rate is 16 per cent but he can’t let his children outdoors because of the smog. Another is based in Singapore, where real-estate prices are through the roof. He has an enthusiastic number of children who have to be educated in three or four countries, with all the attendant expenses, whether Oxbridge, or Ivy League, or some liberal-arts place in Pennsylvania that no no one has ever heard of.

It is clear this man feels guilty about the amount of money he earns, and trapped by the amount of money he needs to earn. He lives in an international space. He wakes up in the middle of the night and does not know which hotel he is in or whether the bathroom is to the left or the right. So I say, “Why don’t you go home?”

“Home?” he says. Home is New Zealand. It is a beautiful place. The schools, he agrees, are mostly free and mostly fine. But no, he cannot go home. His brother is there – an architect. An out-of-work architect. There is nothing for him to do in New Zealand. He cannot go home.

I might have pointed out that it was men like him who put men like his brother out of work, but I am struck by his melancholy, the way he lifts his eyes and sees New Zealand, somewhere on the white tablecloth between the floral display and the bottle of red wine. He looks like Odysseus remembering Ithaca, or Dorothy Kansas: he is pining for a place he is too rich to live in any more.

Of course Penelope is faithfully waiting for Odysseus to return, and Auntie Em could never stop worrying about Dorothy. Home is the place where a woman loves you from. But although it is my all-time favourite thing to do to a man, I do not ask this very rich, slightly disoriented man about his mother. He has problems enough as it is.

You see them at the front of the plane, a global community of money men, tethered to the planet at one or other tax point, effectively stateless. As the money washes over and the money washes back, they move with it, and all of them are going to retire some day to a place they can call their own. As opposed to one of the many places they just own.

At least that is what they say they want to do, but I have my doubts: I don’t think they are ever going to make it back to Kansas.

At another one of these festivals, in Germany, I meet a young woman called Alice, who is studying transnational fiction. This is a very trendy academic area – a friend in the United States says that Irish studies are in decline there, it’s all transnational studies now: migrants, emigrants; it is all about the intercultural experience; exile, alienation, flow.

Alice says this is all very well, but it suits people to say that we are free to move around now. Information moves across borders and money moves across borders and we think that people move too, but if you are, say, a Somali refugee in Dadaab refugee camp (population nearly 400,000) then a border is a very real thing and being “stateless” is very far from being trendy or unfettered.

Home-made decor to order: 3-D printers come home

Looking for that perfect light for your home office? A new chair or coffee table? You might try making it yourself, at home, with just the click of a button.


Three-D printing, a novelty once reserved for science fiction, is going mainstream thanks to cheaper, more accessible technology.

The printers, which now cost as little as $300, use lasers to blast out layer upon layer of plastic or other materials, forming 3-D objects.

And if you don’t have the time, money or inclination to invest in a 3-D printer of your own, there are hundreds of websites selling lights, coasters, sculptures, furniture and even wallpaper crafted by 3-D printers.

New York-based Shapeways, for example, allows users to make, buy or sell three-dimensional designs. Products include a delicate, twig-like egg cup for $8 and a lamp that looks like a nuclear mushroom cloud for $1,389.

“We are consistently amazed by the incredible uses our customers find for these materials,” says Alex English, owner of the 3-D printing plastics retailer ProtoParadigm.

Just some of the decor items you can buy or build with 3-D printing:

Lighting

Among the most popular and dramatic 3-D products for the home are lights, whether ceiling pendants, table lamps or floor lamps.

Belgium’s MGX by Materialise, a pioneer in 3-D printing, is known for museum-quality, futuristic designs. Among the most popular is the Bloom table lamp (about $2,600), a flower-bud-inspired design with joints that you can expand or collapse to release or contain light, says marketing manager Katrien Vandenplas.

Shapeways offers dozens of lamps created by some of the site’s more than 11,000 “shop owners,” or designers. The honeycomb-inspired Veroni lampshade, for instance, costs as little as $15 and comes in a variety of colors and materials ranging from the standard plastic to raw metal and steel.

Wall hangings

Statement pieces for your walls run the gamut in the 3-D printing world.

Shapeways’ ethereal “Whales” ($48) lends modern sophistication with its airy rendition of two swimming whales crafted from white plastic. They almost seem to spring off the wall. Florida-based Proton 3D Studio offers a little kitsch with a pop art-type plastic pi symbol ($21) and the word “geek” crafted in orange plastic script lettering ($24).

Sweden’s Kredema Design has one of the more “off the wall” home-decor products: a three-dimensional wallpaper that rolls out away from the wall to form shelves, magazine holders and even lampshades. Made from sheets of acrylic and wallpaper, the “Off the Wall” collection is available by special order only.

Accessories

From picture frames to vases and even planters, you can design or find just about anything home-related using 3-D printing technology.

Shapeways recently added glazed ceramic to its list of materials, making it possible to craft personalized plates, mugs, salt and pepper shakers, and other items for the table.

Blogger and tech consultant Michael Sitver designed personalized coasters in about 90 minutes using a 3-D CAD software called Autodesk Inventor. He printed them up at Shapeways’ website.

“This is a great project for beginners,” says Sitver, of Weston, Conn., “because designing it doesn’t take too much work, but it helps beginners get acquainted with the tools involved and the process.”

He calls his new coasters a “wonderful conversation piece.”

Furniture

It might sound like a tall order, but it’s possible to craft tables, chairs and other furnishings with 3-D printers as well.

They’re not cheap though, at least not yet.

A day bed crafted from white nylon plastic will run you nearly $20,000 on Shapeways, while MGX by Materialise offers several chairs, stools and tables that look more like works of art than something to sit on. They also run into the thousands.

But there’s a lot that’s still possible with this burgeoning technology, especially as it gets cheaper and more accessible.

“When kids are exposed to this technology, they don’t even blink an eye when something is printed,” Vandenplas says. “When they are older, 3-D printing will fit into their lives much like the Internet and smartphones fit into our lives today.”

Bed-Stuy Couple Brings New Home Decor Shop to Former True South Storefront

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A new home decor and gift shop is opening just in time for the holidays in Bed-Stuy, occupying a storefront that fomerly housed an independent black history bookstore.

Peace & Riot Pop-Up is owned by longtime Bed-Stuy resident and business owner Achuziam Maha and husband Lionel Sanchez, who say they're trying to fill a void for everyday gifts like greeting cards, candles and bath and beauty products.

"We're really trying to fill a lot of holes I think are in this neighborhood," said Maha, who previously owned the African home decor shop Ibo Landing. "We can't fill everything, but I definitely want to fill some of them."

The shop opens on Black Friday at 492 Nostrand Ave., the former home of the True South bookstore. The independent book seller, which focused on black history and culture, was threatened with eviction shortly after shop owner Monroe Brown was sent to the hospital with a stroke and brain anuerysm.

Brown's son, Ajamu Brown, tried to save the shop by holding a fundraiser, but ultimately couldn't afford the newly-raised rent. It closed in late September.

Now Maha and Sanchez hope they can bring a new sense of community to the area. In addition to selling gifts and furniture, the two plan to hold events in the space, including Easter egg hunts and concerts for kids, as well as art exhibitions.

Maha said she was inspired to create a more community-focused space by her grandmother, who lived just a block away in the house the couple now shares, and who every week opened her doors for community members to share her meals.

"I feel like it's my job to continue some of the stuff she was trying to do," Maha said of her grandmother. "[Making] sure we're tied to the community is important."

The two owners met at a concert 13 years ago and "haven't stopped talking since," Maha said. They were bandmates, started dating and were married four years ago.

Maha, an interior designer by trade, began looking for a location to open her new shop last year, and she jumped at the opportunity when the Nostrand Avenue location opened up.

Sanchez, who was laid off from Universal Music last year, decided to bring his social media and design skills to help the shop grow.

"I was always helping her whenever I could anyway," Sanchez said. "It was her vision that brought us to this place. I wanted to support it.'"

Now the two are each bringing their own spin to the shop, using the message in the store's name — Peace & Riot — to focus on the contrast in the items they sell: Maha focuses on more traditional items like furniture and candles, while Sanchez will stock the store with useful knick-knacks like novelty USB hubs and cooking equipment.

"We collaborate in everything," the Bronx-born Sanchez said. "We collaborate in life, we've collaborated in music— we just know how to work together."

Death Star wall tiles show home decor's dark side

Created for an uber-luxe home theatre project, these custom Death Star-themed wall tiles are the decor we've been looking for.

Why would you ever want to clad your kitchen or bathroom in anything else if you could have the Death Star available? Unfortunately, they aren't — but we can still imagine.

These wall tiles were actually created for one of those jaw-dropping themed cinema projects. This one, of course (in case you hadn't guessed) was themed after a space ship, and features red LED wall panels, suitably evil-long chairs — and relief tiles created by Tom Spina Designs, a company that specialises in custom themed sculpture, furniture and props.

The company proposed the tiles as a means of subtly introducing a fan element into the wainscot. "These would give a sense of 'tech' to the decor and, while recognisable to the avid fan, they would not be an over the top, obvious themed element," the company wrote. "The end result blends wonderfully, with our pieces being a subtle accent, just one part of a large and awe-inspiring themed home theatre."

The team created 14 master tiles at 12 inches square (30.48 centimetres) and with a depth ranging between three to four inches (7.62 to 10.16 centimetres). These tiles were cast in tinted resin, and details were painted in to add a sense of variation. In total, 120 tiles were made. Tom Spina Designs made no mention of how much the client spent, but we're willing to bet it was a pretty penny.

Tom Spina Designs also created some custom mannequins for Star Wars replica costumes belonging to the client, but alas, we could find no further details about the project.

We feel, however, that the tiles are little lost in the darkness of a home cinema. They'd look much better decorating our kitchens. Dibs on not cleaning them, though.

Upcycle Your Home Décor

There is a lot of buzz in the air about upcycling. Upcycling lends a jazzy new twist to the “reuse” part of reuse, reduce, and recycle. From turning old maps into wallpaper or window shades to creating funky furniture from shipping pallets, I’ve found plenty of creative and resourceful upcycling ideas on the Web. It seems that no matter the “junk” material I have on hand, there is a craft that can make use of the refuse to create a functional, fabulous addition to my home. Here are some of my favorite upcycling projects that nearly anyone can attempt. Try them out, and make your home all the greener with some eclectic flair.

Homemade Paper

You need plenty of pulp to make your own recycled paper at home, but look no farther than your paper waste bin. Recycled paper pulp can be made from tissues, computer paper, photocopier paper, wrapping paper, brown paper, note paper or envelopes — all used on their own or in combination. First, you’ll make a mold for your paper based on the dimensions you want your finished product to be. The mold requires a metal mesh screen, so you can use an old window screen for this (even more upcycling!), secured by a wooden frame. See paper-maker Marianne Saddington’s mold design here.

Tear the paper into pieces measuring approximately 1 inch square and soak in water overnight. Paper-maker Marianne Saddington offers an example:  ”Tissues can be torn into quite large pieces and soaked for only 30 minutes, while watercolor paper needs to be torn into pieces less than 1 inch square and soaked for two or three days. If you’re in a hurry, pour boiling water over the torn paper and allow it to stand for an hour or two.”

During the soaking period, you can dye your pulp various colors. (Natural dyes are safe and easy to make.) When your paper is soaked, pour the mixture in a blender and blend for about 30 seconds, or just long enough for the fibers to separate. Figure that one load in the blender will make one thin sheet of 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper. Add a little water if necessary to reach a workable consistency that allows you to spread a layer of the pulp over your screen mold. Allow the water to drain and then you are ready to start drying in the sun or wind. On a sunny day with strong wind, your paper will dry in around 2 hours.

Make handmade envelopes out of your paper and you’ll really wow your friends.

Recycled Window Coffee Table

If I had dozens of old windows to make use of, I’d build a recycled window greenhouse. But more often, I fall in love with a single window in a frame that I find at a thrift or reuse store. In this case, I still have several options for upcycling. One of the easiest is to make a coffee table. All you’ll need to add are legs and you are good to go. Either use the legs from an existing table that is on its way out anyway, or you can try this oh-so-easy design that uses legs cut from cardboard boxes. They may not last as long as the wooden legs, but you’ll have your table ready in time to impress a date.

Option 2: Make wall art! If you collect sea glass, glass gems, clear beads or other artifacts that are opaque or transparent, you can glue these bobbles to your window in order to produce a faux stained glass effect. Experiment with colors and sizes of your materials. These window “mosaics” make great gifts that can be completed in little time.

Shopping Cart Furniture

It sounds unbelievable — or at least uncomfortable — to make furniture out of an old shopping cart, but it can be done in a modern, tasteful fashion with a little elbow grease. First, find a shopping cart. Many grocery and big-box stores retire shopping carts long before their useful life is complete. Inquire with their customer service to find out when they will cull old shopping carts that may be rusty or have bad wheels (you can paint your cart and you’ll be removing the wheels anyway). Here’s a plan for an outdoor lounge chair.

First, you’ll use a Dremel or hacksaw (or any tool strong enough to cut through steel) to cut your cart into shape. Remove the front wheels and rear wheel brackets. Bend the side panels into place in order to make armrests. You will bend these side pieces around PVC pipe to give it an armrest shape. Take off the handlebars, sand down the rough edges, and voila! You have a wire chair. But is it comfortable? It will be after you throw your handmade pillows on it!

You’ve already got your steel-cutting tools out. Why not make some oil drum furniture? Yes, it can be done.

Satellite Dish Gazebo


Every now and then, I see an old 1980s-style satellite dish hanging out in someone’s yard. It is clear the thing hasn’t been used for years. Are you one of these people? Larson used three-quarter-inch conduit as braces, cattle panel fencing for the railing, and 1-inch plastic pipe to top off the railing. He painted the whole gazebo black to give it a unified appearance.
